痛失国士，网友们的深情缅怀，让人瞬间破防。有网友说，“他进入了一个梦乡，那里的稻穗比高粱还高，穗粒比花生还大。风轻轻吹过，他戴着草帽，就坐在稻穗下乘凉”。
“中国人的饭碗，要牢牢地掌握在自己手上”。一生奋斗在杂交水稻事业上的袁老，从未停下科研的脚步，也用一生实现了他的“豪言壮语”。
选择农业报国
青年时期，袁隆平有过体育救国的梦想，也曾打算参军报国。最终，他将自己对祖国的热忱，结成了一串串饱满的稻穗。
1966年，袁隆平发表了论文《水稻的雄性不孕性》。这篇论文，拉开了中国杂交水稻研究的序幕。1970年，在海南发现的一株花粉败育野生稻，让杂交水稻研究打开了突破口。1973年，在第二次全国杂交水稻科研协作会上，袁隆平正式宣布——籼型杂交水稻三系配套成功。回忆起那段攻坚克难的日子，袁隆平记忆里最深刻的细节之一，是背着足够吃好几个月的腊肉，倒转好几天的火车，前往云南、海南和广东等地研究，只为寻找合适的日照条件，“就像候鸟追着太阳”！
为国家筑牢粮仓
1986年，袁隆平正式提出杂交水稻育种战略。
1984年，湖南省杂交水稻研究中心成立。
1996年，农业部正式立项了超级稻育种计划。4年后，第一期每亩700公斤目标实现。
随后便是2004年800公斤，2011年900公斤，2014年1000公斤的“三连跳”。
就在不久前，他还依然带病在海南三亚南繁基地，坚持科研工作。5月9日，在三亚国家水稻公园示范点，“超优千号”超级杂交稻高产攻关。进行现场测产验收，最终平均亩产1004.83公斤，比设计亩产多了100余公斤。
“21世纪谁来养活中国？”袁隆平和他的超级稻有力地回答了这个疑问！从“三一工程”到如今的两分地养活一个人，袁隆平一直在实现着他的“禾下乘凉梦”！
